Evaluation of treatment strategies of the late blight Phytophthora infestans in Nepal by population dynamics modelling

چکیده
The late blight disease caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans is a serious pest of solanaceous crops capable of destroying a complete harvest. Therefore it is heavily treated with fungicides, especially in areas where the knowledge among farmers about application and impacts of fungicides is generally low, as it is the case in Nepal. In order to derive efficient treatment strategies with a minimum of fungicide use, a model describing the population dynamics of the disease on potato was established. The model is based on a universal epidemiological theory with further specification for P. infestans. The parameter estimation for the model was accomplished with field data of an uncontrolled epidemic in the Mid-Hills of Nepal. Using this model, different treatment strategies were evaluated by introducing fungicide treatment effects of different fungicide types into the model. Based on both field trials and population dynamics simulation recommendations for an optimised conventional treatment strategy were elaborated. Additionally the modelling tool PhytMod was developed, which simulates population dynamics and treatments and can be used to evaluate treatment strategies for other regions or even for general diseases without the P. infestans specification. 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Melatonin Attenuates Potato Late Blight by Disrupting Cell Growth, Stress Tolerance, Fungicide Susceptibility and Homeostasis of Gene Expression in Phytophthora infestans
Phytophthora infestans (P. infestans) is the causal agent of potato late blight, which caused the devastating Irish Potato Famine during 1845-1852. Until now, potato late blight is still the most serious threat to potato growth and has caused significant economic losses worldwide. Melatonin can induce plant innate immunity against pathogen infection, but the direct effects of melatonin on plant...
متن کاملArabidopsis late blight: infection of a nonhost plant by Albugo laibachii enables full colonization by Phytophthora infestans
The oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans causes potato late blight, and as a potato and tomato specialist pathogen, is seemingly poorly adapted to infect plants outside the Solanaceae. Here, we report the unexpected finding that P. infestans can infect Arabidopsis thaliana when another oomycete pathogen, Albugo laibachii, has colonized the host plant. The behaviour and speed of P. infestans...

Potato late blight, caused by the oomycete phytopathogen Phytophthora infestans, is a devastating disease found in potato-growing regions worldwide. Long-term management strategies to control late blight include the incorporation of host resistance to predominant strains. However, due to rapid genetic changes within pathogen populations, rapid and recurring identification and integration of nov...
متن کاملGenetic factors encoding resistance to late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary on the potato genetic map.
Late blight, a potato disease caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is of great economic significance, and has been the subject of numerous research projects aimed at both introducing resistance to the disease into potato cultivars, and at unravelling the mechanisms and genes underlying this resistance. This report is on publications about mapping the resistance to P. infestans enco...
متن کاملThe early days of late blight
Large-scale DNA sequencing of samples of foliage collected in the 19th century from plants infected with late blight has shown that the potato famines of the 1840s were triggered by a single clonal lineage of Phytophthora infestans, called HERB-1, which persisted for at least 50 years.
